Jesse Van Mouwerik
I’m Jesse. I’m a product designer and a visual artist from Portland, Oregon. Currently based in Berlin Germany, my artistic style draws on imagery from Greek mythology, Dutch masters, Germany’s expressionist and Neue Sachlichkeit movements, Japanese animation, medieval grotesques, baroque frescos, cubism, pop art, artificial realism, Garfield the cat, and indigenous art from regions like his native Pacific Northwest. Most of my artistic work focuses on the creation of original surreal characters meant to investigate the emotions, curiosities, and trickster narratives that cultures around the world often express through the invention of mythical beings. Themes of interest to me include ideas related to dreams, memories, desires, materialism, archetypes, folk tales, globalization, geopolitics, American popular culture, German rave culture, and the capacity for digital technology to amplify and distort human perspectives.
